January Newsletter

Dear Friends,

I have been thinking a lot lately about what it means to be a caring community. The purpose statement of Presbyterian Women says this:

Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study, to support the mission of the church worldwide, to work for justice and peace, and to build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom.
Funerals and memorial services are a poignant reminder to me of the importance of that inclusive and caring community. The many things we do together throughout the year - rummage sales, circles, bible study, potluck dinners, mission events, knitting, praying, serving, baking - make very real our witness to the promise of God's kingdom to each other and to the world.
Wishing you peace and joy in the coming new year!

Upcoming Events
Memorial Service for Jocelyn Glass - January 9, 2 PM
Jocelyn was very active in Presbyterian Women for many years before she and Dick retired to Arizona and New Hampshire. Virginia Mottershaw and Ginnie Spurr are organizing the reception following the service. Please call one of them (or reply to this email) if you are able to help (set-up, serve, clean-up) or bake cookies.

Mexico Mission Potluck Dinner - January 10, 5 PM
Here is an opportunity to support the mission of our church! Come and learn about two exciting mission trip opportunities in spring 2010. A slide show of last year’s trip will be shown and participants will share stories about their experience. Please bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share - or make a reservation and just come (there is always plenty of food at a potluck).
Reservations in the main office or here: http://www.fpcbirmingham.org/events/mexico-mission-potluck-dinner/

Lenten Devotional submissions due - Wednesday, January 20
The Lenten Devotional has been a project of Presbyterian Women for many years. Contributions of stories and thoughts from many church members are bound together every year in a wonderful portrayal of the breadth and depth of our faith community. In recent years, we have been able to email the daily devotional to those who would like to receive it. Please take a moment and share something that has been meaningful to you, some way that God has spoken to you. Let Lois Poston know - she and Irv work hard to find the needed 40 devotions. More information here: http://pw.fpcbirmingham.org/lenten-devotional

We're forming a planning team for next year's event. If you loved it and would like to help create another evening of wonder and delight, let me know.
